Why?

Can anyone tell me why abusive pastors/leaders are so popular? I say this because I notice that those preachers who seem so harsh and stern are often treated like they are the official mouthpiece of the Almighty. It often makes me feel like the problem is with me for having "itching ears". For instance apart from my friend I am the only one I know who actually has a problem with one well known evangelist. Everyone else seems to think he's great.
