Sometimes I just like to be ornery . . . while, hopefully, making a point . . .
As he has done many, many times before, yesterday, my pastor suggested that people "fast" one day a week from "technology." He did this via a video (how ironic is that?) - he was not at church in person - he was off at a basketball game.
How many of us would survive at our jobs if one day a week we announced, "Sorry, can't do that today, I'm fasting from technology!" I know I wouldn't have a job for very long.
As my husband and I were discussing it, he said, "Why doesn't he ever suggest that people "fast" from sports? With the number of people who are addicted to sports to the point of neglecting or even abusing their families, this seems like a great thing to suggest."
We were driving at the time, so I pulled out my blackberry and emailed the pastor and posed that very question. I also told him that our level of respect for him personally would soar if he were to "fast" from sports for even a short period of time.
You see, our pastor's oldest son plays in the NBA and he has two other sons with full basketball scholarships. His 4th son graduated from college last year and has injuries which kept him from being "pro" material so he works for his NBA brother. The pastor takes virtually the entire basketball season off (Jan - March madness) so that he and his wife can travel around the country attending every game imaginable.
Can't wait to see the response I get from that one . . . I'm sure I will suffer for it! Bring it on!
