TOTALLY valid and understandable.
I just bought some books... a book about Mother Theresa's letters and correspondence and St. Augustine's Confessions.
I'm a little daunted by them, but I gave myself the freedom to know that while reading.. I don't 'HAVE' to believe anything.
Even if you made your own decision to go to church, and if you mustered up the courage to go and even walked through the front doors (which I believe totally deserves a pat on the back and a prize!).. I would give you this encouragement, that you may leave at any time you wish if you feel uncomfortable or anxious. Give yourself the out, sit in the back and don't even think twice about what people think. God knows your heart. It's ALL about freedom.
God doesn't shut us in church services like prison gates. We are free to come and go.

I hear you for being scared to darken the door. I wish churches were all far safer places. Hope you can take your time and only go when and if you feel ready without pressuring yourself or being pressured.
I really agree about giving yourself permission to leave or at least step out if something gets uncomfortable.
