The Gospel according to Church

Everything in the Bible is true, obviously
Christian leaders are (almost) always right
The Church way must be God's way
You're much safer and better off in a Church; the world outside the Church is evil and depraved
Christians are mostly better and more important than non Christians
Women must submit to men in everything
To work for nothing or rely on donations is better and more worthwhile than earning money
Prayer, the Bible, knowing God loves you and Church fellowship solve most problems in time
If you're a Christian, you can't really dislike anyone, especially other Christians
Paying attention to your looks is dangerous and ungodly
Quoting Scripture and using spiritual terminology is a form of godliness
No Christian individual, group or activity can really do much harm
Our core values are power, money, influence, public approval and appearance.
Nothing is ever anyone's fault. No one is to blame for anything.
You must not ignore or reject anyone because through you God may be saving them and without your help they might go to hell.
Divorcees, homosexuals, people of other faiths and atheists are all going to hell anyway so you shouldn't bother speaking to them
If you have sex or even think of it when you aren't married God will kill you.
Feelings are usually evil, coming from the World, the Flesh and the Devil
Failure, sickness or difficulty means you're living in sin, lacking in faith, following the devil, not praying enough or just not trying hard enough.
If you criticise or question any of this it's probably because you're blinded by the devil, headed for hell, mentally ill, living in sin or demon possessed.

I once tried to explain to a psychiatrist why my family and church had taught me that emotions were bad. I listed off the reasoning of anger being a sin, if you're happy you're probably not being realistic, if you're anxious you're not trusting God, yada, yada, yada.

His response was, "That only leaves shame and guilt."
I said, "Oh, those two were okay." And they were the only two that were okay.

That is HORRIBLE - and sadly true.

The way I understand it, Jesus died to remove our shame and guilt.

Funny how the church needs to make sure we see and feel those things to the max before we get to let Jesus take them away.

Good food for thought. Some yes, some no, and some I have to think about this one. It does make for a great 10th step inventory of spiritual abuse. I guess I have fortunate. The last three churches the leaders had no problem eating their humble pie a la mode when it came to mistakes. That is quite refreshing.

I can relate to the stuffing feeling and the critical thought sin. The latter does allow a dysfunctional group to hide their failings behind a veneer of piety.

I need to warm the list over more. Great post. Next latte on me.

Hi Jazzie-Jessie,
I have heard these type of comments many times before, especially statements 2-20. From my experience, these comments come from people who profess Christ but have no idea how to live as a Christian. There is a thing called having a form of godliness but denying the power. There are many people who misrepresent the Christian faith, they may sound religious until they are put under the light of God's Word, then their true nature is fully exposed.
