Yeppers, Ab: Harper Hospital is the absolute best around here. You can't get better oncologists around here than you'll get there. Don't think about or bother with the University of Michigan, especially since you live on the east side now. You're better off at Harper. That's where I went for my breast CA "second opinion" after getting diagnosed at U-M because I knew they had better diagnostic procedures there. Also got treated for the aplastic anemia and the blood CA at Harper. My present hematologist/oncologist is a Harper Hosp. doc; I see him at his satellite office in a western suburb. He's on the faculty at WSU, which is where, if you go to Harper, all of your docs will be coming from.

No matter what kind of insurance you have or don't have, you can go to Harper, which shares medical faculty with Detroit Receiving. So don't worry about that. Khan is kind of confined to the downriver area and you're going to get more state-of-the-art, diagnostic procedures at Harper than you would if you confined yourself to the downriver hospitals.

That's a boatload of tests you're having... Can they do the MRIs of your head, tongue and neck in one fell swoop, or do they have to be separate? Whoever ordered all these tests is just being really thorough, Ab, and I'm glad you're having them. None of them is burdensome or long or anything else bad, anyway.

But I'm so sorry you're having to go through this again... :(

Thanks, Abbey, and I'll for sure be keeping you in prayer as well!!!! I'd agree about your son: you can put him on a "need to know" basis, and Lord willing, hopefully, there'll be nothing found for him to know. I PRAY that's the case!

Keep us updated... If you want to PM me about anything local, I'm right here, as you know!

Love,

mary

Ab, Jerry reminded me of something; I forgot this last night: ((((Abbey!))))

So you were born at Det. Rec'g, huh, Jerry? I was born at a hospital just up the Lodge from there, Mount Carmel. (I was told I was the scourge of the newborn nursery during my brief sojourn there... :D )

Well, the beauty of this area as to medical treatment is that the entire Harper/Wayne State University/Mott Children's Hospital/Hutzel/Detroit Receiving/Dingell Veterans' Hospital complex is one and the same. It's all the Detroit Medical Center (DMC). You get the same doctors whether you live in Bloomfield Hills and you earn a 7-figure income or whether you're at the other end of the economic scale. And these doctors are the best. The hematologist I saw for 3 years there (before mindlessly going back to U-M briefly) was the man who pioneered the technique of bone marrow transplantation, one unit at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle in the early '80s and another at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. He was here for awhile, setting up an autologous bone marrow transplant unit at Harper. So, Abbey, be assured that you'll be seen by the best of the best.

I have every confidence that in going to Harper (if that's where you're going now), you'll be receiving the finest quality of evaluation, diagnosis and treatment.

Love to all in Christ Jesus our Lord, Savior and Great Physician,

mary

I understand about you not wanting to tell your kids. I was diagnosed 3 days before my son's wedding and I didn't tell him tell after their honeymoon.
You will be in my prayers Abbey.
