My copy arrived today.

W.O.W.

So accurate regarding high school youth group and my family. Eerie. Very validating. I appreciate JVV for elucidating so many of the subtle lies I learned! I've been trying to do that myself, and he mentions some on my list and some new ones.

Knowing the lies is important when seeking the truth.

Thanks to all who suggested it :)

Okay...my experiences didn't match ALL of the things in the book...many of them...especially the emphasis on performance, appearance, unspoken rules, submission...

But not everything JVV discusses.

I'm assuming that's rather common, but I'd like some feedback? Does it mean it wasn't abuse? Does it mean it was?

Thanks,
~M

Dear FoxInSox,,,
Rather than focus on differences,,,,look for similarities and you will soon ascertain that it was abuse ;) .There are many different methods of abuse and just because a Church doesn't do "this" or "that",doesn't mean that the church isn't abusive.Remember Churches never view themselves as abusive and are extremely defensive on the subject and will justify their behavior to the point of absurdity .....

This is going to be bad of me,....the abuse has been justified to the point of burning people at the stake...a protestant preacher did that & I personally believe many are being "roasted" it's just not a physical roasting, but by some madman in a bully pulpit.:(

yep...

during my recent encounter with my dads old church the trustee's actually said they had rather NOT hear the truth of what occurred... and they said regardless they would NOT act on it...

In other words, some folks find a warm place to cuddle and will protect it at all costs regardless how harmful it might have been to others...

My sister got to the point she was recording conversations with the preacher involved due to his absurd behavior... one of the church officials told her that she should be ashamed for recording the preacher...

Think about that... why would any preacher NOT want to be recorded...

I thought I should add 'mad woman' as well...:o

I'm reading the Subtle Power of Spiritual Abuse again because I am in a different place than when I first read it. I think I might get more out of it now. We'll see.

My X Vicar used to check the sound man WAS recording!
It was the stuff behind closed doors that didn't get published or acknowledged by the powers that be!

I got a copy almost a year ago. I could only read portions of it; too triggering. :(

Know what triggers the hell out of me lately? My Step Study with Celebrate Recovery. Yesterday, it took great strength to stay in the room and answer the questions honestly. I was so mad and upset and the others were just so *happy*. Nothing like happy people when one feels like crap (blech).
