This comment from the article posted struck a chord in me. (and remains stuck in my throat... :p )
Falwell, who started a fundamentalist church in an abandoned bottling plant in Lynchburg in 1956 with just 35 members, built it into a religious empire

Does that sound like an oxymoron to anybody else?
Anna Marta
Yep, an oxymoron, Anna Marta. How could he have been a real pastor to the 24,000 people at that Thomas Road Baptist Church???
While I disagreed with him on a number of things, I think Falwell was extremely misunderstood by the mainstream media and also the Christian media. I believe he did have his heart in the right place, i.e., towards spreading the Gospel. I do think he should have taken better care of himself and he could have started with losing all that weight.
I'm sorry he's gone... But when he'd go on TV and talk with Sean Hannity as though the latter was one of his brothers in Christ, that was a mistake.
He's likely with the Lord right now. The Lord likely has His issues to take up with Falwell, as He will with every one of us in our turn! :o

yes, it does sound like an oxymoron to me.....

I live in Danville, which is an hour south of Lynchburg. And believe it or not he was a good pastor to everyone according to the thousands of interviews we've seen on the news, and read in the paper down here. The students at Liberty LOVE him. They say he couldn't walk across campus and talk to any one person without "being interrupted every 15 steps by a student running over to give him a hug." I thought that was sweet.
I don't think we should judge whether or not someone is a "brother in Christ". We don't know, and shouldn't presume to. I like Sean Hannity and I think he's a fairly good rep for "us".

Many a memory comes to mind when I remember this man. My brother the hippy new ager used to castgate me every time he saw me just because of the press on this man.
I am not and never will be political its just not my thing. I will definitely talk about it and try to keep somewhat up on it because I live in this country and I personally with all of its faults because its my home the only one Ive ever known I love it. But..............its not the kingdom of God its not perfect its not well bluntly put Im sorry if I offend anyone but its not my real government the way I see it anyway.
Nevertherless I hate it when people I dont know are bashed by anyone that being Clinton or Jerry Falwell. Not saying they are in the same pocket you understand I turthfully dont know where the pocket is of either man but I have always though that Jerry Falwell was a put upon person. If he was a true believer and I hope he was, he is now in heaven with our Lord Jesus, where he will finally be comforted and I must say, if he was a believer, shame on those that persecuted him as they have me and you too. Shame on anyone that persecutes anyone.
Its not in any way fair at all!
I always felt he tried.
Maybe it was not always the wisest thing that he did but he tried and did what he could.
If this would have been in the fifties the man would have been the president probably. His ideas were so much a part of that era.
Adding tto that like I say I didnt really know him much at all except that you know I taught in christian schools and he was so well looked upon by them.......I reserved my own opinion thinking to myself that he seemed a little stiff to me but then who am I anyway right?
Does anyone know what he died of yet?
Sometimes my paranoia takes off in these deaths like Im still just sure that Anna Nicole was murdered and her son. Go ahead and laugh at me I loved her. I dont know why I loved her...........why do I love Madonna and the Rolling Stones? I love them and pray for them to know some peace and real joy in believing in Christ some day.
I prayed for and believed for Bob Dillon and look what happened?
I beilieve he is my brother in Christ.
I feel sorry for the right wing..........they all get such a bum rap!

I do the same thing for Paul McCartney from The Beatles, and for Ellen Degeneres, because I LOVE her! She makes me laugh so hard!
And I know what you mean about Anna Nicole, bless her heart. I felt sorry for her too!

Yeah, I think the man was unfairly persecuted, although he did at times have a habit of sticking his foot in his mouth! :D But with the way some treated him, it was like they thought he should be able to talk perfectly, not say the wrong thing, because he was a pastor!
I heard he died of heart trouble.
I was in high school in the early '80's, when I first heard of the moral majority. Kids, of course, made fun of it. :o With me, his passing kinda seems to me like the passing of an era.
Yes, Maggie, you're right: I shouldn't have assumed that Sean Hannity is not a brother in Christ just because he's a Catholic. That was unfair, for I go around hoping that my mom was a "saved Catholic" and that I'll see her next when the Lord brings me home... and there she is, with her "house not made with human hands" right next to mine... :o I retract it. I met Sean Hannity when he came here for a book-signing at a local college, and he was delightful to talk to for a few minutes. When he asked me what my name was so he could sign his book that I'd brought, he told me that's his daughter's middle name...
Christopher Hitchens's hate-filled commentary on Jerry Falwell tells you all you need to know about how "the world" viewed him. Actually, it's a sterling commentary to Falwell's stalwart Christian witness. Would that when I pass away, some (non-famous, of course) atheist like Christopher Hitchens says the things about me that he said about Falwell! There could be no finer testament to the fact that a man did not belong to the powers of darkness than what Hitchens said about Falwell.
Bob Dylan, Jane Fonda -- their witness seems to be lacking, but I do hope and pray that these people are really indwelt by the Holy Spirit. (And I say that about Fonda even as the wife of a Vietnam veteran...)
You can pray about celebrities, and for family members and friends who seem so far from the Lord. I always figure that if the Lord would save me, He'd save absolutely anyone! Praise Him!!!!

My wish is that jerry is in Gods hand now! Yes, he has commented on some things that were outta line (the things about gays, feminists and other sinfilled people creating the 911 tragedy) but, God has punished sinful cities in the Bible! Its really hard to understand. I wish no man to perish. Heck even charles manson. I wish for all to come to salvation.
Im no judge, but hes probably walking streets of Gold.

Oh my gosh Abbey did he really say that?
Well God is the judge not me. When I was in that one church where that asstant principal hurt me so much with that submission teaching thing that was the way he was always talking about the worlds sins............Im sorry but to me they are shameful for even speaking of such things.
The word clearly says why talk about it at all how can they help it they are blind they cannot see what living without sin really is anyway how could they they dont have Jesus in their hearts.
I do believe Jane Fonda is saved with all of my heart I know she is but she is going to the left wing with her gospel..........well so what who are we to say what any person is doing for christ? Doesnt the left wing need Jesus too? I may not agree with her but I do love her and I always did even when everyone was castgating her and to this day I get in big time trouble about it. People had better watch out for picking on Gods kids thats all I can say.
Yes it was Jerry Falwells lost times like my parents times and for all of the crap that went on then I still miss theose days very very much. I hated the hypocrasy of those times and I still do and always will. I hated the willful civil rights disobedience of those days.............when I think of it it still makes me sick.
My Dad was not ever like that so Im blessed to know the truth and the way of loving people regardless of race creed religion anything. My Dad was a straight shooter though. You know what I miss the way families used to know each other and help in times of need........true everything was often surface but still they did talk to each other and care for each other more than I see happening now anyway.
Ill be honest when 9/11 happened I thought first thing about the place in revelations that I still say is the prophesy for this experience.
Revelations doesnt say its because of sin neccesarily..........oh well got to go they are showing this house please pray we get a contract for the right amount please help ME!!!!!!!!!!!
I heard what Falwell said on 9/18/01, and it was that 9/11 could have happened as part of God's judgment on this country and on western civilization for the fact that we countenance abortion, homosexuality to the point of civil unions, marriage, etc., pornography, etc. I didn't hear him say that we "created" the 9/11 attack (he would then fall not far from - with a base of theology, not one of hatred of the U. S. - those conspiracy theorists who say that it wasn't even Arab terrorists who attacked us; it was the U. S. government that imploded the WTC from the inside, and no plane flew into the Pentagon, etc. Many of our Christian brothers and sisters in western Europe believe that... And maybe nobody ever landed on the moon, either, and Elvis is alive and well somewhere  .). I would not discount Falwell's theory that someday, there will be God's price to pay for these flagrant violations of His law of which we think nothing as a society.
Of all of the above unbelievable scenarios, I only wish that the last one were true. ;)

Oh come on guys! This was a good man. He said some things sometimes that were embarassing and probably taken out of context. DON'T WE ALL? Thank God we are not constantly in the public eye. People have said some doosies on here too!
But all in all, he was a very good man! He never got himself into trouble like others. Larry Flint (creator of Hustler Magazine! YUK) admired him for crying out loud!
Tinky Winky is sweet and sensitive, I'm sure he is sad for his family.

Did he say that 9/11 could have been God's judgement or was God's judgement on us?
I know that a lot of people who died that day were believers, and living by God's Word, as are a lot of people in this country!
I think the Teletubbies thing was rather stupid and silly, but I don't think it really hurt anything! :D

Yes, Falwell made some egregious statements about 9/11-as many more "ministers" did in the wake of the tragedy. He certainly had a lot of spotlight and a lot of controversy in his life.
I'm sure he is missed by those who loved him.

If I remember correctly, I think Falwell said that God's judgment would be on this country, but, as I know that a number of believers died on 9/11, I don't think he was saying that believers were incurring the wrath that He meant for "society in general," which Falwell said was coming. (I don't know if that last sentence made sense; I'm really tired... :o ) Sometimes believers suffer along with unbelievers. But then I think about Lot and his family and I think, God got all of the righteous ones out of Sodom and Gomorrah before He blasted them... But then again, God is God and I am not. I leave it there.
(No, no, Amy - good joke placement!!!! :p :p :p )
Falwell said a lot of things I kind of puzzled about and I was certainly "not on all fours" with him doctrinally, but I did like the man. I was on his general, "to-the-flock" e-mail list and I got the last one just a few days ago. Sad to think I won't get any more e-mails with his distinctive flair... The Lord has him now - and He has the final say.
I have the feeling we can all say, as we know the Lord, that we'll see Jerry Falwell "in the morning..." - and where we'll see him, there'll be no more night. So he said a few weird things. I would sure hate for someone with a tape recorder to follow me around all day long! Or even quote letters I've written, some even lately...
