I have a college friend who is on disability. She called right out of the blue and asked if we wanted to rent a house. Her dad died last fall. It is too much for her. The house is paid for. It would keep a roof over her head. We would be looking at paying $450 rent for a house in a wealthy neighborhood in the east side of Cleveland. Lots of room.
I am getting the possibility that opportunities are drying up in Texas. With my leaving the church and the lackluster job possibilities, this is starting to look interesting.
Any feedback?

wow sounds like great living conditions. and i bet there are good jobs in Cleveland. I pray that God will give you wisdom. I usually figure if the door opens it is meant for me to go through, the whole time praying "If this isn't what you want God, shut the door!!!"

Cleveland is a very cool city. My daddy always said you have to go where the opportunities are.;) The house sounds awsome and the rent is even better!
Our son just moved back here from Cleveland (he'd been living in a loft-type condo right downtown, for just under two years) and while the economy is somewhat depressed there, it's not in the toilet, as it is here. Cleveland seems to "rebound" easier than other places, anyway.
The metropolitan Cleveland area, I think, is a lovely place with some very nice people. Our son was going to a great church in Richmond Heights, OH, just east of Cleveland, but unfortunately, it was folding up just as he was getting ready to move back here. However, we did find some other good churches just east of Cleveland. There's one in Mentor, along Lake Erie; there were tons of other possibilities. A lot more than around "Motown."
There is an ethnic tenor to the general "church world" in the Cleveland area. Cleveland has a lot of people descended from eastern Europeans who have ethnic churches... It's not a wildly evangelistic, Pentecostal, apostolic or charismatic area. Also, with John Carroll University there, I would characterize Cleveland as generally a very heavily Catholic metropolitan area.
However, you certainly can't get a better deal on a house like that - anywhere! :) And the Beachwood Place mall was one of my favorite places...
They do get quite a bit more snow than we do, due to the lake effect. If we get 5 inches (which is about what we have on the ground right now), from the same "system" Cleveland will get 9-10". And it hangs around longer because of the winds off the lake. Boots, Ex-Shep -- get good boots & a good winter coat for everybody if you move to northeast OH! ;) :p
Given a job opportunity (and all it takes is one!) and a chance to live in a nice place for what you'd be paying -- heck, yeah! Sounds like it's at least worth investigating... :D

Sounds like God may just be answering prayers and meeting needs.
When I look back over your posts it appears like God has again come up with his specialty - not A, not B, not C, but D "none of the above." He loves to come up solutions that surprise us and provide new and creative things for our life and development and growth. Bet you would never have thought of Cleveland on your own, huh? :)
May you be blessed and may you discern HIS VOICE as you make your decision on whether to get out of the boat or not.

Rent's great. Just make sure you get some kind of agreement on how long you can rent the apartment for that price. Some kind of lease should be drawn or at least a verbal agreement as to how long the rent is good for. This will save a lot of headaches later on for yourself and your friend (from my past experience in renting). With price of gas escalating, maybe you might want to work that into the rent factor if where you're moving has more cold days? Just a thought and all the best to the new adventure!

Well, actually I had comtemplated moving back to Ohio for a few months now. It was never high on the priorities list. I know the Lord will provide, but trying to move 1400 miles with a Nissan Sentra and two cats?

I never got the Texas accent. I am still classified as a DY. Any questions? Listen to me talking to the shuttle drivers at work.

So - where were you initially from, or did I miss that?
Isn't it true that in TX, you're a DY in some parts of the state, but you're okay in others? I mean, when our son was briefly in Houston, I/we were fine there. (I have a typical Midwest accent, like Chicago, only, being so close to Canada, some of our vowel sounds are a bit more Canadian than American.) No one cared in Houston, but if we went to Dallas or someplace a little more "west-Texas-y," we stood out more. But still, we were always treated well.
I loved TX. Not really a "Texas kind of person," but being among so many Christians was great. There are so few here... I now live very close to the People's Republic of Ann Arbor and they don't allow Christians there... :D

Hey, at least the Lord isn't asking you to lead the children out of Israel and moving all of there things and their animals! :)
Seriously, I'll be praying and asking the Lord to continue to work out all the details and that your two cats will travel well. :D

Sounds like a good move there ex-shep.
We visited Cleveland about 15 years ago. It has some of the friendliest people we ever met. I'd probably go without thinking twice.
My favorite thing to pray for is wisdom because "God gives generously without finding fault."
I'd recommend sedating the cats.

Fidelio loves to travel. Rose hates every minute of it. Last we moved down, she hid in the refrigerator when we moved in.
Do keep the situation. There is some interfamily squabling with my friend and her family over the house. We are going. My wife has had it not be able to find work. The final crowning blow was her need a sanitation liscence to be a waitress. That strained my credulity.
