Theodora's post "He who sings..." in the No Cross-Talk forum made me wonder if Theodora really wanted an answer.

I'd sure enjoy seeing all the responses (see what kind of diverisity we have). :)

This morning I saw an article on Rice's top 10 music favorites.

Let's see, there's Classical, Baroque, Jazz, Blues, Country-Western, World Music of various types (Latin, Klezmer, Belly Dancing, Celtic etc.), Classic Rock, Weird Al Yankovik :D , Rapp  , Bluegrass, Contemporary Christian, Gospel, Gregorian Chants, Motown, Choral, Big Band, Rythm & Blues, Folk, Lullaby's, Kazoo :D , Marching Band, Lawrence Welk, Heavy Metal, Bird Songs, Hymns (hers :) ), HipHop...

Classical, Pop (some of it), Country (yes, I said country), Gregorian Chants, Alternative (sometimes), Classic Rock (some of them), Oldies (some of them), clearn R&B.

I haven't been able to listen to Christian music for a long time, so that's not on the list.

I love most music!!!! I have a favorite type that tells a story and you can feel the story. I'm listening to Aaron Shust album Anything Worth Saying and those songs weave a beautiful story of restoration which I am praying for. (rap) The so called music if you can call it that I don't understand most of the words except the four letter words and they always sound angry.

I'm a kid, and a rocker. I love rock music. But I can definitely stray over into all sorts. Beethoven. Mozart. old school hip-hop. 80's new wave. But rock's got my soul ("God gave rock and roll to you"- dont ya know). Praise and worship is for church (for now, I'm still new to this). I'm actually very suprised and pleased to see christian artists doing so well in the mainsteam today. U2, obviously. Ben Harper. The younger kids (my age, 24) using the tool of music to promote good modelling.

The 80's!! The 80's!! Don't forget about the 80's! Best time ever! Happy! Greedy! Fun! We had an actor for a president, best one we ever had! (No bleeding heart, hippy coments please!:D )

80's music is fun and it reminds me of good times. I also listen to comtemporary christian on KLOVE. They have some good stuff.

I was a grunge girl, so I loved all those bands. Though now they are a little too pissed off for my taste.

I love Kelly Clarkson, though I feel like a poser listening to her. I feel like a 31 yr old mother of 3 is trying to be a teenager again! *blushes* ok I guess I am!:D

The Cure, The Beatles, Frou Frou, Depeche Mode, The Sundays (all-time favorite!), Def Leopard, and 500 other bands from the 80's and early 90's.....

I started this thread so I guess I will confess my favorites (and show my age).

Classic Rock (Creedence Clearwater Revivial, John Fogerty, Santana, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Heart, Alice Cooper, Styx, REO Speedwagon (Ridin' the Storm Out), Steppenwolf, Who, Guess Who, - focus on guitar solos). :D

Classical (Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Hadyn, Strauss, Ballet)

Baroque (Handel, Bach)

Jazz

Blues - Especially guitar

Klezmer

Kenny G

Herb Alpert

Celtic

Bagpipes

Broadway Musicals that have grown on me ( Joseph, Guys & Dolls, Wicked)

Weird Al Yankovik, Alan Sherman, Apologetix

Petra

The only Rap I like is Father Stan Fortuna (and maybe Will Smith)

When you get old you can't keep track of the current stuff.

Saying you're old is an excuse! :D ;)
Part of the church's problem is they don't stay current and they tell us not to. But that is VERY dangerous. How are we supposed to know what to keep our kids away from, or how to tell them what is not acceptable, if we don't have any current examples? Or we don't even know what they might be subjectd to?

For a change of pace - David Bromberg, Jerry Jeff Walker. :D

Oh yeah, I like Big Band too, and show tunes! My parents grew up in the 30's and 40's so I have a huge appreciation for music from that genre.

I love Gene Kelly/Frank Sinatra musicals!

I'm not such a fan of country. But I do like Patsy Cline. My daddy used to sing with her, they both grew up in Winchester, VA.

Have any of you tried pandora.com? It's so much fun. You put in artists that you like and a bot tries to match it with other artists. Sometimes it works... sometimes it doesn't. But all you have to do is give thumbs down and that artist isn't played again... or at least not that song. I did find it a little short of celtic music and zydeco though.

I can't tell you a favorite. My itunes is so mixed up that no one would be able to pigeon hole me.

Gotta confess.. I love Ben Harper and never knew he was doing christian music!

...Jerry Jeff Walker.. Hey Buckaroos! Camp stomper time again…..

Up against the wall, you redneck mother, mother who has taught your son so well…

Currently I’m listening to Ruth Fazal’s One Thing I Ask from her Inside Your Heart album. Here are the very simple words:

One thing I ask of You Lord,
This is what I seek:
That I may dwell in Your house all the days of my life.
To gaze upon Your beauty.
And seek You in Your temple.
This is what I ask.

I haven't been able to listen to Christian music for a long time, so that's not on the list. I understand how you feel. I was just able to start listening to Christian music again last week. :) It takes some time to get used to it again.

I still can’t listen to certain worship albums. :(

I wasn't really "expecting" anything from the boards, but now I was very pleased to be able to get an idea of the diversity we do have here, thanks to your follow-up. Intriguing, and FUN to read. Thanks! (More on that, perhaps....when/as I can get to it.)

FWIW... An initial "reason" for my post that you mentioned from the No Crosstalk Forum was that I was being semi-triggered by some previous thread titles and didn't want to keep seeing them. Posting my own positive thought of the moment---i.e. positive for ME--as a reminder of what can and does support me on my journey was one way of staying clear of negative thoughts when I logged on. Admittedly, since it was in that particular venue, it was more sort of "thinking out loud"--aka a "rhetorical" kind of question as I mused on what supported me.

But...as a follow-up to the question of the moment, FWIW...I'll offer these thoughts for now:

As a singer with considerable experience in "traditional" church choirs, my musical repertoire is deeply influenced by "older roots"----and yes....the classical and baroque periods of music "speak" a lot to me as well. More than that, I'm conscious of a kind of "integration" in the mind/body/spirit WHEN I sing...hence the quote from St. Augustine. At the moment, having just used Mozart's Requiem as part of my own grieving process after the loss of a friend, I'm thankful that we do have modern technology which allows us access to so much of what WE need to hear, when we need to hear it. AND.... though I'm really embarrassed to confess this... I'm also thankful that I happen to live in a quiet neighborhood, in a house of my own, where I can...when I need to...perform my own little "sing-along" and feel the release of tension in that sound, without worrying about "what the neighbors will think!" ;) In short---music can be wonderful catharsis, as well as the "emotional language" we all need....certainly that was my heritage from my family on both sides. Will spare you all those connections at present! (I note that many/most of the responses to this thread come from the experience of hearing music, not performance. From my perspective, I hope that those here have also been able to find a personal outlet as well for there's no substitute for actually "doing" what is necessary to create sound for making music "your own.")

Anyway--for now, I just wanted to acknowledge having read this thread and to thank all for contributions. VERY interesting, I think!

Blessings to you all this day---

Theodora

P.S. As I mentioned in my response to Jane's thread, I'm posting irregularly of late due to various "issues." Your prayers appreciated, if so inclined. I'll be back in touch when I can and, in the meanwhile, I am trying to stay current with the board(s) as able. Grace and peace to you all!

I am with all of you on all your favorites but right now I get a lot from Chris Rice (believer) Switchfoot "Dare you to Move", and what about this one sports fans, have you heard Matisyahu? He is Chasidic Jew, reggae, rapper and is on the main stream charts but sings about Mashiach (messiah) etc. He's a mind blower when you read his lyrics.
love ya'll, Jimsmuse

that's the stuff I grew up on. I'm a huge zeppelin fan. Had to put it out of my mind for awhile because I thought it was evil. Even burned my albums (which would be worth a mint now!) But I counted my losses and just bought their entire collection on CD! Lovin' it!

Finally catching up on some of my posts & here y'all are having a fun conversation without me!

First off...did someone mention the 80's?? Hmmm....must've been my imagination.

Second off...since this is an abuse forum...I remember being sat in a room full of children (late 70's? early 80's?) and being made to listen to "back-tracking". Remember that??? where they played the music backwards and found hidden messages from satan??? Apparently, "Paul's dead". So any music I listened to was contraband.

Anyone else have similar experiences??

That questioned...It's easier to say my dislikes than likes...

most country...like Simon, I just don't get it.
Rap/Hip Hop...violent, misogynistis

Most favorite that plays in the house and I have lots of CD's to prove it...
Jazz
Latin Jazz
World Jazz
World groove
World
Reggae(although I own no CD's - just a radio listener, did go to a Ziggy Marley concert at the Hat-shell in Boston)
modern folk
almost anything Putumayo!!!

Most of the classics (too many to name here):
Zepplin!
Floyd!

Sting is still hot, thank you very much!

Anyway...wish I could remember what somone mentioned about the 80's....hmmm

ME! ME! It was ME!! Love Love Love the 80's, best music ever! New Wave, pop, heavy metal, glam rock....It was a beautiful time!:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Oh and STING IS SOOOO HOT! I liked him better with The Police.

We did the same thing when I was in youth, on a retreat. (the records backwards thing) We were at a lake house in very rural Pennsylvania, and it totally freaked me out! The devil in one of the doorways in the cover of HOTEL CALIFORNIA, by the Eagles....the bizarre end of STRAWBERRY FIELDS, by the Beatles....Roller Coaster by Ohio Players, some girl being murdered in the crowd, you can hear her screaming in the song.....

I'm not the bravest of soldiers so I had nightmares for quite some time, and I still can't listen to Strawberry Fields!:o
