Been thinking a lot lately. Recovery seems to happen slowly, and sometimes I find myself a few miles back from where I was the day before. People have recommended a lot of things to help me, most of which weren't too helpful. It's like what helps for one person doesn't always help for the other. I'm wondering what things help people here who are in recovery?
For me...
Not being forced or pressured to go to church when I feel scared to go
Hearing that it's okay if I have to take very small steps
Reading the book The Search For Significance by Robert McGee
Talking about what happened/venting
Crying
Learning about the history of the teachings at my old church
Not pushing myself to pray or sing or worship when I feel anxious from past experiences
Hearing that my status with God doesn't depend on whether I go to church, feel like I can talk to Him, or am struggling with issues of faith

Oh yeah. And sometimes I can't hear or think about God or church. That's been getting better, but like I said...some days I find myself miles away from where I was...

Having unadulterated fun helps me a lot. If I didn't have my horse and my motorcycle, I'd be hard pressed to find fun and intensity free activities.
Lightening up and laughing is a great way for me to put problems into perspective.

*Trite saying coming up!*
Laughter truly is the best medicine! It's trite but true! You have to not take yourself too seriously.:p
Being on here has helped immensely!:D

Welcome Scooter,
For me not reading my bible staying away from anything to do with the Bible.
I don"t mind people using verses
here I am ok with that.
There are days I don"t even want to think of God.
Seeing God in nature :D seeing what he has made. On these days I need Him most and HE never lets me down.
I see something special like a rainbow,a pretty cloud, a cute chipmonk ect.
I see God in a simple form where there is no Bible beating.:D :D butterfly shirley

what is helping me most is noting my own special walk with God; our own relationship, which no one else knows about. It's very comforting and satisfying to be able to walk away from preachy people knowing that its not God I am walking away from. I will go ahead and get mad and take shots at the "crazy christians" (in my head, or to someone who understands) and not feel guilty (as a release). Truely, the only one we are accountable to is to God. He lifts me up, no one else can do that, including myself.

The Lord helps me every day. I have to constantly turn it over to HIM! My recovery is a process. ( boy do I hate that word!) lol..I want it now! :o
And like you, somedays it seems like I progress fast, then other days it feels like I've taken 3 steps forward & 2 steps back!
Laughter is definately a plus like the others have said. I love to laugh! Especially the kind that come from the gut that make me have tears streaming down my face. :D

I'm with SpinningHead on this one. It took me awhile but I now enjoy doing a lot of things I really like. Did I hear anyone mention GOLF? :D FORE!!!!!!!
I do good things for myself without feeling GUILTY! When I got past the guilt thing, life took on a new enjoyment. God loves us often in spite of ourselves. We are His kids forever. He wants us kids to have fun and enjoy what He made for us. When you really get a chance to gear down and meditate on His Creation, you can understand how much He wants us to enjoy it.

Dear Scooter,,,
The most important thing in recovery is not to isolate.Stay connected to others who are recovering.Be a help,,,,,can you help everyone ??? No but maybe one ;) Remember there is a phrase that is more profound than "I love you" that phrase is "Let me help" ......Weather we are recovering from abuse, addiction, obcession, what ever it is,the recovery paradox applies universally..................."You can't keep what you don't give away" ;)

I was thinking one of the biggest things that has helped me has been self care...
caring about my physical health (check ups, eating right, starting a new exercise routine)
caring about my emotional health (reading self-help books, therapy, boundaries)
caring about my spiritual health (prayer, meditation, being real with God - like I could be fake! )
caring about my friendships (making sure the friends I have are supportive, have good goals in life, like similar activities)
caring about my time (making sure I'm not wasting it on things that keep me static)
when I'm feeling good about myself, God and all around life...I find I can be there more for others. I empathize better. I listen better. I care better. :)
