I just received a card from one of mom's friends today. She said that after hurricane Katrina she never heard from my mom again. Even through the christmas holidays. She just chalked it up to mom being busy moving...which is true... but I'm beginning to wonder how much the hurricane had to do with traumatizing my mother. I remember her telling me that she had a recurring dream all her life of the world ending by flood. It's such a weird coincidence if a flood really ended up being the trigger that ended her.

Hurricane Katrina was rough on me too Amy. I got depressed after it for a few months. When I saw those people lose everything they ever had and all of the people they loved, it triggered me bad. It was too close to home for me.
I think Katrina triggered a lot of people who had traumatic losses in their past. That's how trauma works. Did your mom ever suffer any traumatic losses that you are aware of?

Hi hornblower... I'm so sorry you lost your mom too :(
My mom became very depressed in the process of moving away from Louisiana last year and early this year. She and Dad closed on selling their house the day before the hurricane hit. Some of her friends lost everything, but they lived far enough north that they didn't get much damage to their house... only lost a few shingles and tree limbs. They gave some of their stuff to those who lost things to the hurricane. After they moved at Thanksgiving, mom never came out of the funk and finally suicided on Jan. 23. She was 76 and I guess she figured she had lived her life already.
John, Mom survived the great depression, cancer, the suicide of both brothers. I think she had plenty to be traumatized about. A very wierd thing is that she had a recurring nightmare about the world ending by a flood. I dont' want to get weird on ya'll... but it does make me shudder when I think of the flooding of New Orleans and the end of mom's life shortly thereafter.
