View Full Version : Scrupulosity
Here's the thread I mentioned in When Religion Is An Addiction thread.
If the churches would take a hard cold look at what this says, they could learn a lot.
Scrupulosity
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Derived from the Latin word scrupulus (a sharp stone), implying a stabbing pain on the conscience.

Here's a Google search on this:

Reg, this is excellent. Thank you so much for providing these links: you are a real mensch!
I was first thought to have OCD when our son moved out of state - far away, actually: Houston, TX - and I was way too concerned for his safety. He'd moved to an area I was unfamiliar with. He was old enough to take care of himself, but he's somewhat absent-minded, even though very intelligent, and so I about went nuts. (I felt better after I visited Houston and saw what a nice place it was. I was raised in Detroit... Houston is safer! ;) ) Then, back here, we joined a couple of churches successively where "scrupulosity" in behavior was emphasized. But the last one was the one where the "pastor" wasn't overly scrupulous himself, in particular with regard to his behavior towards me. Having been raised in the Catholic Church, though - and I would advise other Catholics/former Catholics especially to check out Reg's www.ncpamd.com link; it's very helpful - it was hard for me not to be overly scrupulous. Over-scrupulosity applies to being a parent, big-time, especially if you were yourself raised with your parents exhibiting, shall we say, a certain "studied nonchalance" for your own safety as a kid, which my parents certainly did. So I've been over-scrupulous with regard to our son. I didn't want him to feel as though no one cared about him or was looking out for him, as I always did. He wound up feeling the other way: smothered, and that's not good, either! :o
These rotten churches that "feed" OCD and over-scrupulosity need to lose their attendance. Simple as that. I totally understand those on this forum that just flat-out don't want to set foot inside a church anymore! My family and I are just church-hopping and not going anywhere two weeks in a row anymore... A couple of weeks ago, we heard a preacher (his website: www.frankturner.org) who talked about "religion" and said that that's what's wrong with worshipping God these days. It's all about a relationship with Jesus Christ, not about "denominations" and "people stabbing each other in the back at church..." This was a place where one could utter an audible "Amen!" so I did it.
This is an excellent topic to discuss and I thank you once again, Reg, for starting this thread.

Thanks Mary. I must admit, you got me with the word, mensch. I had to look it up. You are very kind in saying this. Thank You. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mensch
