I've just had a friend alert me to serious damage from tornadoes last night in Kansas and going into Missouri. This also affects my alma mater, the University of Kansas, as well as my hometown of Lawrence, Ks. Just wanted you to know that I'm thinking of you and will be keeping all in prayer, as your prayers are also appreciated for my hometown and K.U.

Thanks--

Theodora

A major tornado outbreak ravaged Missouri Sunday (March 12) as a squall line emerged from Kansas ahead of a strong Pacific front. SPC reported at least 99 tornadoes during the 24-hour period ending at 3 am CST.

The day started quite early with damaging hail across much of eastern Kansas. Lawrence saw one of the first morning tornado touchdowns, later declared a disaster area with the University of Kansas campus badly hit. The storms passed through Kansas City, where Stormtrack user Mike Peregrine reported that Kansas City’s luxury car dealerships got trashed by large hail — Hummers, Lexus, and Acura, and others took a beating.

The tornadoes began as the storms entered Missouri, too many to list here. Sedalia was hit by a 16-mile track tornado. A mile-wide tornado was reported in northern Pettis County. The Associated Press reported three deaths, one a woman in her Sedalia mobile home, and another near St. Mary where a couple in a pickup truck were crushed by a propane tank.

Interstate 70 saw traffic jams, overturned trucks, and debris on the roadways. Stormtrack moderator Scott Olson ran into a large grain bin on Interstate 72; the crash was reported to be minor.

The storms continued overnight, with 23 tornadoes reported during the 11 pm to 3 am time block.
