(*Trigger Warning)

I modified the words a little. See if you can tell which ones:

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
"This could be heaven or this could be hell"
Then the pastor lit up a candle and he showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
I thought I heard them say...

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year, you can find it here

His mind is tiffany-twisted, he's got the Mercedes Benz
He's got a lot of pretty, yes-men "elders", that he calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat.
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget

So I called up the pastor,
"Please bring me my wine"
He said, "We've had the new wine of the Spirit here since 1969."
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say...

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
They livin’ it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise, if pay your tithes

Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink champagne on ice
And she said, "We are all just followers here, we've given up our minds."
And in the master’s chambers,
They gathered for the feast
Most of them are filled with guilt and shame,
and fear the Number of the Beast.

Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
"Relax," said the pastor cult/leader,
We are programmed to receive.
You can checkout any time you like,
But you can never leave!

Strange you should post this. In my SA church rock music was forbidden and the Eagles were even talked about as being particularly evil. This was towards the end of our involvement there, but since the pastor had brought them up that song, Hotel California, began to play in my head. It was then that I realized that our church was a "Hotel California". You could check in, but your could never leave. My kids had never heard of the Eagles so I explained the song to them and then went out and bought an Eagles CD. After listening to the song, they agreed. This song summed up our church. SA churches get their hooks into you and it is very hard to leave. They are very much like a drug addiction.

ETA: Oh and I like your version of it even better.

You got it Meg! Took the words right outa my mouth. Religious addiction is just as bad as a drug, alcohol, gambling, sex, or food addiction. What makes it even worse is that it looks like a good thing instead of something evil. That is, until you realize you've been duped. That's when you realize it's worse than heroin or cocaine. Abusive religion is the most mind-numbing drug I have ever ingested.

Yup, I though I was going to have to leave my husband to escape. He was so decieved and duped that we could not break him loose from them. The kids and I saw it all so well, but not him. That church nearly split our marriage and family. It wasn't until they turned on him that he finally saw the truth. Of course we were praying for him and I think that's why the church turned on him because he would not have left any other way.

Voyager---

AMAZING that is the song we sing everytime we pass our old church building! No kidding....

(I love the eagles........)

I will be printing this one out so we can change the words that we sing when we drive by........

maybe I'll mass email it to my 'old' friends....without any comments so they can speculate as to why I am sending it........
