View Full Version : New Year's Celebration Plans?

So... I'm curious... what's everyone doing this weekend for the New Year's celebration?
I'll start... Tonight begins the festivities with a movie. My best guy friend bought tickets for all his friends to see BrokeBack Mountain. I'm going with about 12 gay men and one other female coworker. I've been in the situation before... it can be humorous. I'm not in their world, but am included in their world... if you know what I mean? I think I'm kinda like Will and Grace... I'm Grace and Mark is Will. At least that's what they told me. Sooo.... should be a fun time. One of my biker friends made the statement... "All those pretty men around and not a one for you!" I thought that summed things up pretty well... haha!
Saturday I am giving away an english saddle to someone from freecycle, cleaning house, raking leaves, doing laundry, fix a leaking faucet, etc. etc. etc. For the evening? I might go to my favorite hole-in-the-wall for their new years party. Not sure yet... downtown nashville is pretty fun New Year's Eve too. I went a couple of years ago and ... well... that's another long story! The end result was that some drunk woman grabbed the microphone through a window behind the drummer and screamed into it. Whadda ruckus! I told her at least they couldn't kick her out of the bar... she was on the sidewalk... LOL!
Sunday... gotta ride the horse and the bike... might do some of that on saturday too!

Have fun...but also keep your wits about you!
Enjoy your status as "I'm not in their world, but am included in their world..."...and yes, I think I DO know what you mean. Good for you for your ability to socialize outside your normal "comfort zone"....AND to make it OK for those around you as well.
And oh YES....enjoy those rides, especially on horseback! (Riding horses was one of the pleasurable memories of being with my dad in Germany....once he got past the initial "DO it MY way" phase of riding instruction for my brother and myself and I got past my fear of having the horse do anything more than a trot! May have to compare notes sometime as to how you learned to ride, etc.!!! Just think of me a bit when you do and imagine me enjoying "riding" with you too!)
Happy New Year, (((Willow)))! I've been enjoying getting to "know" you a bit in this past year and seeing the progress you've made in different areas of your life. May you know peace and continued healing in the year ahead.
Grace and peace to you and yours---
Theodora
P.S. Oh yes..."plans" for me??? Well....being the last of the big "whoop-de-doers," IF we're both awake, my husband and I may renew a mini-family tradition of working a jigsaw puzzle on New Year's Eve (as long as we feel like it!...we seldom make it until Midnight anymore, but have noted that the new year tends to arrive whether we're there to note it's coming or not!) We'll also hope to have a chance to listen to some more of our Christmas music on recordings and on videotape, since we never get enough of this AND since...for us..."Christmas" doesn't officially "end" until Epiphany.
New Year's Day, my husband's local bicycle club has a tradition of going for a ride and he hopes to do that. Not sure what I'll be doing, though we may try to get out for an early Eucharist first. At the moment, I'm trying to recover from a pretty good chest cold which hit me after returning from Kansas and all of THAT marathon of a Christmas on Tuesday. (I wasn't too surprised at that, though I did do what I could do to take care of myself and not get too tired. Hard to manage at times, however!!!) So...all in all, looking forward to a nice QUIET weekend as possible, sort of feeling we've EARNED this rest!!! ;) :D

Hello Willow-
You sound like you are going to live it up!
New years eve kinda scares me and I have no idea why because I don't recall any bad memories----
I always try to stay home, too afraid of drunk drivers hitting me....and I 'm not normally a fearful person.
This year- working at the dorm with the boys from 3-11....praying that the drive home will keep me safe....and possibly watching the ball on tv with my husband if he hasn't fallen asleep yet!
Before I found out I was working, I was planning a party for my children and their cousins- but that idea will keep until next year.
Will also be working sunday so there won't be any drinking for me.
Looking forward to the Monday off with my husband so that we can start painting my daughter's room.....purple!
have a great new year....
love,
jane
Thanks for asking Amy.
Here's the blurb:
NEW YEAR'S EVE Saturday December 31, 2005 - 8:00 P.M. until???
LOCATION: Chartwell - Clarkson Village, Mississauga
Potter's style event with the addition of board games, and other 'party' activities. Special late night artist (TBA) and post midnight buffet. COST: $25.00
The entertainment is great. They get good talent. I've heard some exceptional talent.
I heard JEANINE NOYES recently. She was exceptional. Another Shania Twain???
Here's her website. http://www.jeaninenoyes.com/
I'm meeting my new gal friend there. Really looking forward to it.
Before, I usually stayed home and played it safe like Alice. :D

Willow's plans are not exactly my dish of tea. But since recovery is self defined, break a leg.
The cats will get bathed at the stroke of midnight. I resolve not to make resolutions. I would have been more dramatic, but the party makers are on back order. 01Jan is just another day at the office.

I don't know how in the world you bathe a cat (having actually tried to do that once)
Heard a good joke about bathing a cat.
1) flush toilet so you are sure the water is clean
2) put shampoo in the toilet
3) put cat in toilet and quickly close the lid and stand on it (don't try to sit, the cat may be mad by now
4) make sure the cat has enough time to flip and flop around enough to be clean
5) flush toilet once or twice to rinse the cat
6) step off of toilet, quickly open the lid and run like h**

New Year's Eve will be a quiet evening...home with the family. I don't want to be out on the streets with all the crazies. Probably watch some football and have a glass of vino, but I doubt that I will roll in the New Year and watch the New York Ball fall. My former pastor will have beaten everyone up for the last several services to make sure they are guilted into being there for the New Year's Eve service...probably just want them to stay all night since the next day is Sunday and they damn well better be there then. Hey after all they could pray in the new year all night, ya know.
Thank God He has freed me from that slavery...I'll pray right here in my home, believe it or not He even hears me right here in my own home, I don't even have to be inside the four sanctified walls. ha ha.
Have a Blessed and more free from bondage year than this one.
Cheers to all.

The more I ponder the weekend ahead and the weekends past... I'm thinking I may just want to cozy up by myself under a nice blanket and hibernate for a few days.
I did go see the movie with my friends tonight. Talk about confusing! I'm glad I don't have to live the lives portrayed in the movie... that's all I have to say about that!

Until I got my you know what to a meeting, I was isolating. If you are going to hibernate, I can lend use Rose, a cat who does marvelous blanket duty. :)

UM. Yeah
Well, last night was pretty much the end of our Christmas. Had our oldest son and daughter-in-law over to exchange presents. Then we took them out to our favorite pizza place. Came home and we all watched "Robots" together (which they had given to our youngest son for Christmas). Cute movie, BTW...
Don't really have any special plans right now for this evening...it would be fun to do something spur-of-the-moment, though. I have invited the youth group from our new church over Monday evening to watch the Fiesta Bowl. Ohio State is my alma mater and a pretty popular team around here! :) My husband just bought a video projector so we plan to project the game on the wall! The kids should love it and we love to do things with the youth (kinda makes my husband and me feel young again to be around them!)
Hope everyone has a happy and safe New Year's celebration, no matter what your plans are!!!
Love, Gwen

Ahhhh... thanks for the offer. I have two cat blankets of my own here. It's going to be a nice warmish sunny day here. I'll have to get out and ride either a horse or a bike... or both! There's nothing wrong with isolating is there?

Leaving shortly for dinner out with friends, then back to their house to watch Star Wars on their big screen TV with sensoround sound. Then to my sisters house (she's having a party) and will probabl;y be there at midnight.
LOL...IF i can stay awake! I've been up since 3am worked until 3pm showered and on my way out!

I have plans to go an hour north to a friends house that I haven't seen in about a year.
I called up there about 20 minutes ago to tell them I couldn't make it #1 it's snowing pretty good here and I don't have 4 wheel drive. #2 Like Janice, I get up at 4:15 every morning and doubt I'll make it till twelve. (I can't remember when I've seen the ball drop last).
But then I got a call from someone else who was going and she told me a bunch of people were coming that had left my former church the same time I did, and they were coming to see my daughter and I.
So, now I'm gonna try to get there if I can.
Happy New Year,
Joe

Hey... sounds like ya'll are going to have fun! Hope the snow doesn't stop you Joe... sounds like a fun night! Janice... just use toothpicks in the ole eyelids... or paint eyeballs on your lids. No one will be the wiser.
I had a good, restful day today. Got my chores done for the most part... but took a huge nap too. Ahhh... the luxury of a holiday!
Ex-shep... I can see where isolating is a problem when you have a family or a loved one.

Just wondering whether you might like to drop a line to those people you missed seeing....who were missing YOU. Do take at least some comfort in that thought tonight, OK???
As for me....I'm having to get to bed early because of my cold, but have left my husband happily working a puzzle! Sometimes it's just not possible to have things work out in OUR time frame, yet various purposes are served, I think. For my husband and myself, after a REALLY intense time of seeing family etc. over Christmas, I think perhaps that some deep quiet/reflection time is good for both of us.
Grace and peace to you! Know that I'll be thinking of you and will be continuing to watch for updates.
Blessings to you and yours in 2006! I'm thankful to have begun to get to "know" you a bit on this forum in 2005. All the best as you continue your healing journey. It sounds to me like you made some very GOOD decisions this night.

should have referenced to Theodora's post that she was turning early because of a cold.
Ended up inviting my parents and sister's family over for a chili and hot dog dinner! (I don't like sour kraut!) The kids all played, then we watched a movie together until almost time for the ball to drop. Watched the ball drop and shouted "happy new year" to each other! :D My dad played "Auld Lang Syne" on the piano! Everyone left by 12:15! My middle son and niece went bowling with my oldest son and daughter-in-law.
What an exciting New Year's celebration! Now I'm getting ready to go to bed!
God bless you all and may 2006 be a year of healing and hope for each one of you!

LOL..I can't believe it but I DID manage to stay awake and was the first time I've seen the "ball drop" since 2000! My New Years Eve's of the last 8 yrs. (except for 2000) were spent working in the church kitchen. Interesting..since i've quit all my ministries....(1 of which was the kitchen) they didn't serve food the last 2 yrs. HMMM.

Hi everyone,
My friends did call me from the party and we spoke for awhile, it was nice. My daughter and I spent the evening eating popcorn, playing darts, and watching TV.
I made it till 11:30 but that's about it, the ball could've dropped on my head and I wouldn't have known.
The holidays are nice but I'm glad they're over, they are very hectic, more work than work, gotta try and change that.
I agree Theo, I value a little solitude about now too!
Well, it's 2006, a little bit farther from our SA, and that's a good thing!

YAYYYYY Janice made it through! I took a long nap earlier yesterday and stayed up quite late... didn't see the ball drop coz we were in the middle of a movie. Other than that it was cool. Saw Dick Clark propped up on the counter. He was made up to look forever young... but the telltale signs of his recent stroke told the truth about my aging generation. No Virginia... there are no immortals on the earth.
Joe... sounds like you were cozy and safe there with your daughter. Glad you at least got to talk to your friends on the phone. Maybe you can make plans with them sometime for a visit. I don't know what I'd do if I ran into some of my old friends from church. I suppose I'd talk to them and act like nothing ever happened.... bok bok bok... chicken!
WHAT DICK CLARK NOT IMMORTAL????
You speak words from the anti christ, just kidding.
I worked until 11pm and would normally be home in a half hour. We got some snow here too, not much maybe only 4 inches....but driving back roads in it on new years eve found me spending the entire conversation with Jesus;) funny how we go there when we are afraid!
Got in at 5 of 12....my oldest son the only one awake so we watched the ball drop, turned off the tv and went to bed.
But I did have a nice evening with the boys at the dorm watching the movie sky high. ....and look forward to the new years day celebration that we have scheduled today.
happy happy everyone....

Well Jane... glad you got home to see it in with at least one person.
One year I remember I was running madly with my friends past a grocery store in an alley to try to get to where the guitar was dropping in nashville. The clock struck twelve and we found ourselves greeting each other and a few other stragglers under some graffiti on a wall... never did find that danged guitar.
Re: Dick Clark... It's funny how american society (do they do this in australia too?) projects such emphasis on certain iconoclastic people. I mean... it really wouldn't surprise me if poor old Dick has no bladder control at this point in his life... yet they have him out front and propped up to look like he's still plenty-nine. I was thinking... is that so different than the icons the catholic church portray as saints... and the idols of foreign religions? OK... my brain is in a weird mood today. HAHA
