Boy, spiritual abuse is everywhere.....
For years, we laughed about Dana Carvey's (Saturday Night Live) imitation of the now famous "Church Lady". We all have laughed and mentioned her here, too...
The other day I saw an interview with Dana Carvey and the interviewer asked him how the Church Lady character came about (I had never heard the story before) He said that he grew up in a pretty conservative middle-class suburban family and his family were church-goers, not regular church-goers but they did occassionally go. When they would go back to the church (after being gone) there were always ladies there making those remarks (his character always uses) those shamey, guilt-making comments like, "Nice of you to come to church, FINALLY, and pay a little attention to JESUS!!!!"
Anyway, as I listened I couldn't help but think how interesting it was now knowing what I have come to know about spiritual abuse and I realized that underneath "the humor" and the jokes and the laughs was probably an awful lot of pain for him and his family (like us here) because of the way he and his family were treated....I also thought about what an impact those times at the church must have made on him, for him to remember those moments so clearly years later and to actually create a character from it!
Just an observation......doesn't matter who you are; rich, poor, young or old,
SA leaves a big impact on you!
