Jane,

Did you mention that your son has mild autism? I believe that our daughter has Asperger's Syndrome or mild autism. All of the symptoms are there. I remember reading a few of your posts regarding sensory and bedwetting issues. I also remember you replying to one of my posts when I outlined some of my daughter's symptoms.

I am just now realizing that my ten-year-old daughter has every symptom listed of Asperger's Syndrome. She starts 5th grade tomorrow. I found out today that her new teacher has a degree in psychology majoring in childhood behavior disorders. Thank God! Maybe she can help us find a therapist or a parent's group that can offer some support for us. Until now, we had no idea what we were dealing with. We thought it was anything from ADHD to ODD to Bipolar.

Anyway, I would really appreciate anything you or anyone else has to share regarding this matter.

a lot of the symptoms are similar and overlap. I have often wondered about some of my relatives that have been labeled bi-polar. I think that they are also more likely to be aspergers. My grandfather graduated magna cum laude from Brown University with a degree in (ugh) Math. He was one of the early computer pioneers for Travelers Insurance Company way back when....

Bill Gates is said to be aspergers so your daughter may have an incredible future if given the right help to socialize and direction.

anyhow, I digress. My son was diagnosed with Sensory Intergration Disorder which I am told may end up on the spectrum soon.

I have TONS of info, give me a chance to sort though what is relevant, ok? I don't want to flood you with a bunch of stuff.

I am on a group for austim-aspergers, do you want that info? It is parents who banter about every day stuff with children either diagnosed or about to be.

I stay on because they are helpful in the sensory areas.

Have you had her evalutated by that therapest?

Your school can do evals but depending on your district it may be better for you to get a private eval if your insurance can pay for it.

I'll get that stuff and get back to you. In the mean time remember to take some quiet time with your wife. Kids with these emotional issues can be draining one day and incredibly wonderful another. We often forget in the midst of their emotionally charged moments to take time for ourselves... :)

love ya,
jane

here's the support group address.

autism-aspergers@ yahoogroups.com

I still found it helpful to meet with the groups once a month. To see and be with the adults and children helped me better.

My wife saw an article on Aspergers and read the symptoms. She gasped and passed the article to me. I read it and looked at here. We showed it to our oldest son. He said, "That sounds just like K! (his brother)"

My wife read a couple books on AS. I went to an online AS support forum and asked about the pros and cons of diagnosis at this stage (he's 15). Mixed advice, but primarily encouragement for diagnosis.

K saw the book, read a little and said, "Hey, that sounds like me!" We talked to him about it, asked him how he felt about testing. He was definitely not interested.

I work in an engineering firm, so I work with AS people everyday. I am used to them, well, pretty much. But, I've only been here for 14 years.

My son's AS symptoms are not severe. If he is AS, it's not extreme. He can function pretty well, but his "logic" is pretty interesting at times, when he doesn't want to do something.

In His Grace,

Michael

Thanks everyone. I am going to check out the sites you listed as soon as possible. I have been very busy the last few days, so I'm sorry for not replying sooner. Thanks for taking the time to reply. I will keep reply as I am able.
