When replying to a post, do I hit the reply to post button or post a new thread or does it matter? I just want to make sure I'm doing it right. when I replied to Shirley it put my name on the subject part of the thread. thanks

Well, if you want to reply, you can do it three ways.

The quote button lets you reference a part of a particular post within your reply. It generates the text of the specific quote to which you are replying, within quote tags, which you can then edit as you wish to work around what you write.

The reply button at the TOP of the thread will generate a first level reply to the thread base post. If you are set for "Hybrid Mode" (see Display Modes button at top right of page just above the box with the post in it) and your browser permits it, the top box shows the hierarchal organization of the thread and the bottom box(es) show the thread post(s). A first level reply will link back to the original post in the thread.

However, the reply button at the BOTTOM of the thread will generate a reply a level under the level of the lowest post in the thread. So if the thread is four posts deep (base plus three tiered replies) and you hit the bottom button, that post becomes the fourth tiered reply. If you can't see the hierarchal organization this makes less sense. If threads get too deep, you have to go to the next screen to see deeper replies.

So if you are replying to a reply, so to speak, they can stay together. If you want to reply to the main post but NOT to another reply, the top button lets you do that. And if you want to reply just to a specific post within the levels somewhere, you can quote and then delete it just to get the reply to the level you want within the thread.

Have I made it clearer or worse? :)

Even if you change the subject line, btw, it will be subordinate to the main thread subject line... so it generally isn't worth the effort to change the subject line. There IS a thread somewhere whose subject line is "sarah j douglas". Was that the thread you were replying to? That would explain the subject line question.

Hope this helps. Again, welcome.

Sharon
