Okay, now I sound like Klaxon (http://redwing.hutman.net/~mreed/warriorshtm/klaxon.htm) , but I have a great excuse.
Just finished this "illustrated novel" (comic book, if you will) called Blankets (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1891830430/qid=1123220041/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-1702350-6412839?v=glance&s=books) by Craig Thompson.
It is an auto-biographical novel about his fundamentalist upbringing, feelings of loneliness in the Christian subculture, and his first love.
It is painfully and refreshingly honest. Excellent artwork mixed with great humor.
I cried.
"Something about being rejected at CHURCH CAMP felt so much more aweful than being rejected at school"
"At 'secular' school, I perceived myself as victim to the WOLRD's CRUELTY, I suspected that God would reward me one day for enduring the daily hardships"
"But church camp was SACRED GROUND, and it seemed the popular kids were being BLESSED by GOD with social and athletic graces, and that God, for some reason (I could think of many), looked disappointed upon me."
From page 79. The illustrations are wonderfully creative and and some are just painful to look at because they hit too close to home. The highschoolish social hierarchy thrives in church. When I go to church, the whole atmosphere feels like the church camp that the author describes so well.
