It can happen in so many ways, Attic! But mostly, what I've seen is that a leader holds "obedience/respect to me = obedience/respect to God" over them. That's how it happened to my family. That's how it happened to my Mom's family, who were smart enough to leave the church before Jim Jones took it to Guyana!

I wish I could help you find something in that area, but sadly, I don't even know of any in our area that I could safely recommend! :(

Dear Attic,

You may find more resources on that topic here in other Recovery from Spiritual Abuse forum here:

http://www.christianrecovery.com/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=3

That's their special focus. May God guide and provide for you.

In His Grace,

Michael

Dear Attic,,,,
First thing to remember, this type of religion isn't about God.It "IS"about controll, money, power, influance, and "Narcissistic Paranoia" of the Church leader.

I don't know of any counselors, and I myself am not a counselor, but I live on the East Coast and did my masters thesis on the topic of addressing the spiritual and theological concerns of former fundamentalists in the U.S., and I would love to speak with you about the religious and spiritual side of things, although I am not trained in any psychology, so I could not help you with the relationship issues. My cell phone number is (704) 754-3619 if you are interested. I am trying to start a ministry of my own in this area.

Would love to help- totally free of charge (of course)

For as long as I've had a personal relationship with God, I've encountered people suffering from religious addiction. They are often folks who have struggled with "other" addictions during the course of their lives (e.g. alcohol, drugs, sex) or are ACA's (Adult Children of Alcholics). Apparently, the transference of one addictive lifestyle for another is fairly common, and when addicts come to faith in Christ, such a transference can occur.

It happened with me and is playing out again. Point well taken. I am actually doing a fourth step inventory right now. I have two well qualified gentlemen who can hear my fifth step. Good reminder. Thanks for the share.

Jerry, even the thread is dated, you may want to bring it over to the spiritual abuse. It might have more of an impact there.

I watched a beautiful woman destroy her own home with a notion that she was better than her husband becauyse she could speak in tongues. Im sure thats not how she would see it but I promise you thats what it was.

Its not even religion that does it's nothing but pride. Spiritual pride thats what they should call it because to me thats what it is. Thinking youve got something that someone else cannot experience or doesnt have the insight or that maybe God doesnt love them as much as He loves me .............oooops yep thats what it is, nothing but pride. I see this stuff every day every where.

Yes, I found out recently that even inmates in prisons have cell phones (they are considered contraband, but drugs are contraband and there is a huge amount of illegal drugs in prison, too)

Now, you can access the internet via cellphones.
