I remember hearing someone in an AA meeting say that she could handle an earthquake just fine, but if she broke her nail it might ruin her entire day. I think I know what she means.

Tonight was the first night of Math class and I had prepared everything that was in my power to get ready. But I had not planned on what I was powerless to control. The classroom is set up with a computer and projector for using PowerPoint. I have all my lecture material in PowerPoint.

The computer worked fine, but, you guessed 'er, Chester, the projector did not. Despite numerous attempts, which added to my frustration and image of myself as a technoidiot (Never worry, I discovered, about trying to make a good impression on students the first day of class).

When the power fails and powerlessness reigns, whaddya gonna do? Duh! Write on the board the way they did for centuries before computers. It actually worked just fine, but I called the computer help desk from my office to inform them of the problem so that the projector is in working order by Thursday night. Or we'll be doing math the old-fashioned way.

Thankfully, as Professor S.F.X. Van Dusen, the Thinking Machine fictional detective says, "two and two make four, not sometimes, but all the time" It's good to know that some things don't change.

Or how about being very capable of raising my son with autism, but falling apart when he got teased on the bus and other seating arrangements needed to be made!

Ugh! Computers! They're hard to live with ... and hard to live without. We always use PowerPoint for our picture presentation when we come back from a mission trip and it's always touch and go until we see that it WILL in fact work. I always worry because the pictures are such a huge part of our presentation (they are really irreplacable). So far it's worked but I always go into a service like that knowing that it may not ... and that God really doesn't need PowerPoint to touch someone's heart. Sure is easy to rely on the modern technology though. Have you seen the new "Smart Boards"? They are really cool! Probably just more for me to mess up though. ;)

I try to look at the small stuff that frustrates me as another opportunity to exercise recovery principles instead of an opportunity to be King Baby demanding that everything go according to plan as I have determined the plan to be. I'm hoping the system works tomorrow, but am prepared for another session like last night.

No, I haven't seen the new Smart Boards. Take care.

Kids can be piercingly cruel. I admire you for taking on the challenges of raising an autistic child capably and lovingly.

Yes Tim, power point can be very frustrating! I use it at my church for the song lyrics and sermons.
Very embarrassing when it acts up in the middle of a Sunday morning service!

Hope things go better for you tonight, Tim!!! I struggle so much with ANYTHING "new" in working with computers, that I'm always impressed with people---like you!---who have so much more knowledge about how to use the technology. HOWEVER....it IS so VERY frustrating to have done everything "right" and then not have things work out "RIGHT!"

Your "recovery principle" here---not "demanding that everything go according to plan...." is one that I am trying to exercise right now as we shift/re-shift what needs to be done to get through this wedding. Where there are differences of "opinion," I'm trying to remember that what is MOST important is not the outcome of whether I "win or lose" a point...but how I HANDLE the difference of opinion, being able to accept "no," being able to TALK through the differences. I'm thankful to say that I THINK I'm making progress in that regard and am still "going with the flow".....more or less! ;)

Your prayers appreciated for us all, however, as I will be praying for you as well. I'm so thankful that you're "here" and able to share something of your present "journey" with us. You ARE an inspiration!

Blessings---
