Unfortunately, though smokers may "know better," remember that nicotine IS an addiction...and a very powerful one. It IS a concern that, in spite of her surgery, she came back to smoke again...and yes, it does make one wonder a bit whether this is a kind of "slow suicide" which Willow suggests.
Thanks for your honesty about your feelings about this---understandable! You have done/are doing what you can in your family and for your mom and, though she may not directly acknowledge your efforts, I would seriously doubt that NOTHING is "getting through" to her. She may well feel that she is "beyond help"---in so many respects--and not really have the will power to WANT to try to do anything more for herself. I would not be surprised if she were also quite depressed....or have you mentioned that before? And...that too is something more than just needing "will power," etc.
Yours is indeed a very difficult situation. Please continue to post as you can and know that you have my deepest empathy. If I may...I will keep you and yours in prayer.
