Groups: There are currently more than 125 groups. They meet mostly in local churches, but also in institutions, including some rescue missions. There is no common format for group process. Participation is limited to alcoholics/substance abusers. Family members are directed to other resources if available. Group List
History: AV was founded in 1948 at the Chicago Christian Industrial League rescue mission. Dr. William Seath, AV's founder and director of the mission was a prominent leader in the International Union of Gospel Missions. He served as president of the IUGM and in other leadership positions. Dr. Seath appreciated the work of Alcoholics Anonymous and recognized their effective efforts to help alcoholics to gain sobriety. Yet, he still felt that coming into a living relationship with Christ would give the recovering alcoholic so much more. In March 1995, Alcoholics Victorious became an official program of the International Union of Gospel Missions (now the Association of Gospel Rescue Missions, AGRM). The ministry is supervised by the AGRM Director of Education (currently Michael Liimatta).
Attitude toward AA and other 12 Step groups: In AV meetings, both the Twelve Steps and the Alcoholics Victorious Creed are used. However, AV is not intended to replace Alcoholics Anonymous, Ala-non, or any other support group. Nor is it a substitute for treatment centers, rescue mission recovery programs, or professional counseling. In Alcoholics Victorious, the 12-step approach to recovery is combined with support from God's Word, confidential sharing among group members, and loving prayers.
Relationship of groups to national organization: Local leader fills out application form for a group charter. Charters are renewed annually with a small annual fee. National office serves and supports but does not exercise control over affiliated groups.
Events: Annual conference. Held in conjunction with the Association of Gospel Rescue Missions annual meeting, usually on Memorial Day weekend.
