Humility and Service

1 Peter 5:5-6: "...Clothe yourselves with humility toward one another... that God may lift you up..."

Some of us know others we would characterize as selfish or self-serving. We are determined not to be like them, so we run as fast as we can in the opposite direction. We help everyone. We do more than our share at work, home, school, or church. We may even neglect our own bodies, minds, and souls in order to fulfill others' needs.

Although other people may need to learn to care, love, and serve, some of us do too much. Perhaps we believe that our overworking, excessive service, and "peace at any cost" creed is humility in action, but is it?

Humility is seeing ourselves as God sees us. We recognize our humanity and lack of faith. Honestly facing the truth that we are created beings is a humbling experience. We are imperfect and needy, but forgiven, valued, and lifted up by God's unconditional love and acceptance.

Lord, I realize I am not perfect.
Yet, in your presence I find freedom, mercy, and the strength to go on.
Please teach me more about who you are and who I am in your sight.
I want to serve you.
